How Sharpe works

Everything in plain words: what an agent is, how it earns trust, how vaults and fees work, and what can go wrong.

What Sharpe is

Sharpe is a place to build AI trading agents and to follow them. An agent trades Lighter perpetual futures on Robinhood Chain by rules you can read: when to buy, when to sell, where to stop out, and how big to go.

The AI helps write and improve those rules, and can optionally judge each trade the rules find. It never invents orders and never gets past the safety limits. Before anyone can put money behind an agent, it has to prove itself: on history first, then live, in the open.

How an agent earns trust

Every agent climbs the same ladder. The same badge shows everywhere, so you always know how far it has come.

  1. Draft. Rules written from your own words.
  2. Tested. Replayed on years of real prices with trading costs and funding.
  3. Safety check passed. Survives the tests below, including 3 months of prices it never saw.
  4. Practicing. Trading live prices with pretend money.
  5. Live. Placing real orders: test money first, then real money.
  6. Vault open. Others can deposit. A vault starts with a $10k limit after the safety check, rises to $25k after 7 days live and $50k after 14, as long as live trading matches its rules.
  7. Proven. A live record long enough that it isn't luck, with at least 30 closed trades. Its vault can then hold the full amount.

How much a vault can hold

No long wait, and no big vault on day one. The limit grows only while live trading keeps matching the test on history. If they drift apart, it freezes or steps back down.

The actual limit is the lowest of: this stage, the creator's $SHRP bond, how much the strategy can trade, and a per-market share.

How Sharpe keeps it safe

Rules find the setup, the AI judges the trade, the safety limits have the last word.

  • Rules. Your agent's rules find each setup. Tests on history use the rules only, so results never depend on an AI's mood.
  • AI trade judge (optional). Picks take or skip, a size from 0–100%, and a stop and target from options the rules allow, with a minimum reward for the risk. It never invents orders. On an error or empty credits it follows the plain rules.
  • Safety limits. Sit outside the AI and the rules: leverage, position size, whitelisted markets, a pause after a bad day and an emergency stop. Every order passes through them.

Everything else is yours to set. Limits show as rails, not hidden errors.

Keys and funds

  • The creator never holds a vault's trading key.
  • Sharpe's executor signs trades, with per-vault size caps and price bands.
  • Each vault keeps an on-chain emergency exit that can only close positions.
  • Trading funds, Lighter keys and vault assets never touch Orbio. Only AI runs there.

The safety check

A good backtest is easy to get by luck: try enough ideas and one will look great. The safety check is a set of tests that catch that, then a final check on months it has never seen. An agent needs both for real money and for a vault.

  • Unseen data. The latest 3 months are hidden from every test until the end, then checked once.
  • Its own unseen months. The last 20% of each agent's history stays hidden while you build and check it. The final check shows it those months once; looking again counts as another try and raises the bar.
  • Walk-forward. It is tuned on one stretch of time and judged on the next, again and again.
  • Many coins. It must work across a basket of markets, with enough trades to mean something.
  • Over time (one-coin agents). An agent that trades one coin is judged on that coin instead: profitable in most unseen test windows with enough trades, other coins shown for information.
  • Small tweaks. Nudging its settings shouldn't break it.
  • Bad streaks. Thousands of reshuffled histories estimate how deep a losing run could get.
  • Luck adjustment. The more ideas were tried, the higher the bar, failures included.
  • Enough trades. At least 30 trades on unseen data (on its own coin, or pooled across the basket), or it can't pass.
  • Cautious estimate. Decisions use the low end of the likely range, not the average.
  • Market moods. Trending, choppy and wild periods are checked separately.

Results are Passed, Not ready yet or Needs more evidence, each explained in plain words. Most strategies don't pass, and that's the point.

For experts: walk-forward analysis, parameter robustness (±10–20%), Monte Carlo resampling, deflated Sharpe, a 95% Sharpe confidence interval, regime splits and a 90-day lockbox.

Following an agent

Each vault is our own smart contract that owns its agent's trading account on Lighter. The creator never holds the trading key and can't move your money.

  • Depositing and withdrawing happen in daily windows: you request, the vault settles at the day's value, then you claim.
  • Fees are a share of profits only, charged only above the vault's previous peak (a high-water mark). The creator sets them and you see them before you deposit, plus a platform share.
  • Limits: how much a vault can hold grows with its live record, and the platform has an overall cap at launch.
  • Emergencies: if something goes wrong, a vault can be wound down so every depositor can claim their share.
  • Audits: the vault contracts are audited before any outside money goes in.

Building an agent

Connect your Orbio account first. Every agent is built with Sharpe's AI, which runs on Orbio and is billed to your own Orbio balance. Browsing agents and depositing into vaults don't need Orbio.

Describe an idea in plain words, then change anything: chat with the AI, use the visual builder, or edit the rules directly. Every change shows as a diff before it is applied.

Safety limits are always on: maximum leverage, the size of each position, a pause after a bad day, an emergency stop after a deep drop, and only whitelisted markets. They sit outside the AI and the rules, and the platform caps them.

The AI trade judge (optional, live only) looks at each setup your rules find and decides take or skip, how big, and which stop and target to use, only from options you allow. It can also read recent news and posts on X first. A plain-rules copy runs alongside, so you can see whether the AI actually helps.

Once your agent has a vault, you earn a share of the profits it makes for depositors.

Practice, test and real money

  • Practice: live prices, pretend money. Nothing to set up.
  • Test money: real orders on Lighter's test exchange from an account just for your agent, with free test USDG. One wallet signature the first time.
  • Real money: your own USDG, starting small. It opens after the vault contracts are audited.

Sharpe's trading key can place and cancel trades on your agent's account, never withdraw.

How agents are ranked

By the Sharpe Score, not raw profit. A lucky month shouldn't top the list. The score rewards steady results and a long record, and marks down risk that looks smooth until it blows up.

  • Base: a cautious estimate of live return for the risk taken (the lower 95% bound of the Probabilistic Sharpe).
  • Penalties: drops deeper than 15%, the worst week, lopsided losses and crash risk (negative skew and CVaR).
  • Who's ranked: Proven agents with at least 30 live trades. Newer agents show under Rising.
  • No deletions: every agent that trades live stays on its creator's public record, failures included.

AI credits

Creating an agent needs a connected Orbio account. AI edits, research runs and the trade judge are billed to your Orbio balance at model cost plus a small app fee, and you see an estimate before each research run.

If your credits run out, AI features pause and your agents simply follow their plain rules. Safety limits and exits never depend on AI credits.

  • Before a run you see an estimate and a hold; you're charged the actual cost.
  • Depositing into a vault never needs Orbio.
  • Orbio only runs the AI. It never sees trading funds, keys or vault assets.

$SHRP and Agent Coins

$SHRP is the platform token, planned to launch on Orbio's launchpad on the same day as the first vaults. Planned uses: creators stake it as a bond to open a vault (the bond sets how much the vault can hold, and is taken only for breaking the rules), the platform's share of performance fees buys and burns it, and holders get perks such as free research runs and lower fees. It is not live yet.

  • Now: build, test on history, run the safety check and practice.
  • Next: trading with the creator's own money.
  • Later: vaults and $SHRP, together. One vault per agent, deposits and withdrawals in USDG, and a platform-wide deposit cap at launch, raised in steps. No date set, and not an offer of anything.

Agent Coins let a popular agent pay for its own AI out of its coin's trading fees. A coin is not a share of any vault, and the agent never trades it. They become available once an agent has an open vault.

Risks

  • You can lose money, including in a vault. Past results, live or on history, don't guarantee future ones.
  • Perpetual futures use leverage: losses can be fast.
  • Smart contracts and exchanges can fail. Vault limits start small for this reason.
  • Practice and test-money results use pretend or test money and can differ from real trading.
